Hey, Salem House Provisions family and friends! We want to address some common misconceptions about palm oil and share our commitment to environmental responsibility and human rights.

First things first: there’s a lot of negative buzz around palm oil, much of which stems from concerns about deforestation and environmental impact. Yes, these issues are real and critical. However, it's essential to distinguish between all palm oil production and sustainable palm oil production.

We're proud to say that the palm oil we use is certified by the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil), a leading organization founded in 2004 that promotes sustainable practices across the palm oil industry. They unite stakeholders from every sector to ensure that palm oil production is environmentally sound, socially beneficial, and economically viable.

🌱 Why not just switch to other oils? It's not that simple. Palm oil is incredibly efficient in terms of land use compared to other oils like soybean or sunflower. Switching could actually lead to more deforestation, not less, as more land would be needed to produce the same amount of oil.  Palm tree cultivation generally requires less pesticide and fertilizer per unit of oil produced compared to other crops. Switching to other oils could lead to soil degradation, water pollution, and other environmental issues. The palm oil industry supports millions of livelihoods, particularly in developing countries. Transitioning away from palm oil could have significant socioeconomic impacts. While other oil crops also provide economic benefits, the transition could disrupt existing economies and affect smallholder farmers dependent on palm tree cultivation.

📈 Impact of RSPO Certification and other initiatives: As more companies commit to sustainable palm oil, the demand increases, encouraging more producers to get certified. This push helps enhance the overall impact of sustainability efforts in the industry. In 2022, Chain Reaction Research (CRR) reported a continued decline in deforestation associated with palm oil production. Their latest publication reveals that deforestation in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea has reached its lowest level since 2017. Other organizations, including the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the World Resources Institute (WRI), have also observed this downward trend in recent years. So, while the palm oil industry faces challenges, concerted efforts are being made to address these issues. By choosing RSPO-certified palm oil, we're not only ensuring a lower environmental footprint but also supporting a move towards more sustainable and ethical production practices globally.

We will continue to be transparent and sustainable in everything we do. It’s not just about always choosing an alternative but also about sourcing our materials from suppliers that practice eco-friendly methods.
